- Plant Info:
Botanical Name: Pisum sativum
These are stringless peas with edible pods. The peas should be planted in full sun as soon as the soil can be worked, roughly late February/early March.
This variety of peas does not need a trellis, but would benefit from a simple 3-4 foot stake for support.(That length is reduced by being driven into the soil. If you want 3ft of support from the stake, buy a 4ft stake.) They don’t need fertilizer. Mulch is optional.
Prior to planting, soak the peas in warm water for 4-6 hours to help with germination.
- How to Sow:
Sow soaked peas 1 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart. Keep soil moist but not soggy.
- After Planting:
Seeds will germinate in 7-14 days. 1-3 weeks later, they will develop their true leaves. Once true leaves have developed, thin the seedlings to give 6 inches of space between plants. Thin the extra seedlings by using clippers to snip the plants off at the soil line to keep root integrity of the remaining seedlings. If you choose to mulch, now is when you add some mulch around the base of the remaining seedlings.
- Harvest Time:
Most plants will start to have mature pea pods about 60-70 days after planting. The pods are ready to harvest when they grow to 2-3” long. They should be harvested by using garden shears or kitchen scissors to avoid damage to the plant.
