Kentucky Wonder Bush Beans-Growing Instructions

  • Plant info:

Botanical name: Phaseolus vulgaris

Both the beans and the pods are edible. Seeds should be planted in full sun, when the soil temperature has warmed to 60–70 F (roughly mid-March).

This is a bush variety of bean, so it does not require a trellis or staking. These plants can optionally benefit from nitrogen-rich fertilizer AFTER they have flowered, but too much nitrogen will burn them. Mulch is optional.

  • How to Sow:

Plant the beans directly into the ground 1 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart. If you are planting multiple rows, separate them by 18-24 inches. Water deeply 2-3 times a week, depending on the weather.

  • After Planting:

If you choose to fertilize, side-dress the plants. If you choose to mulch, mulch around the base of the plants.

  • Harvest Time:

The beans will mature 50-65 days after sprouting. They can be harvested when the pods are 6-9 inches long and feel firm but still flexible. Harvest by using garden shears or kitchen scissors to ensure no damage to the plant.

Aim to harvest every few days once the first bean pods reach maturity, as regular harvesting encourages plants to make more pods.
